Oasts and Coasts 300 km AudaxSaturday 27th April 2013 @ 6am
Thank you to everybody that entered this event. The general consensus was that it was a good route. The NE wind wasn't what we expected and wore down most of the riders before it provided welcome assistance for the last 80k. The 28 finishers made it round between 14 and 18 hours.
The Oasts and Coasts 300 was a brand new Audax event for 2013 starting at Hodsoll Street, near Meopham organised by Tom Jackson.
A 6am start give you 14 hours of daylight, with an undulating route over the beautiful North Downs at Toys Hill, past Hever Castle and across the Ashdown Forest to a cafe control in Uckfield. Then further undulation through to Battle and Brede before a descent into Rye and a flat section across to Hythe at the half way point.
A good chance to take a look at the Kent coastline and experience some great roads. The first 100k is definitely scenic. Hopefully a SW tail wind will follow you from Uckfield around to Dover; then drop at Herne Bay for your evening return!
The village hall start and finish was at Hodsoll Street, a pretty hamlet near Meopham. Hot drinks and snacks before the 6am start, and soup or similar at the end were included in the entry fee. There was parking for about 20 cars at the village hall.
